November in Bern statt.

Magazine production http://www.scribus.net/magazine-production/ http://www.scribus.net/magazine-production/#comments Mon, 25 May 2015 08:49:15 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=263 We are a small group in a non-profit organization (DanChurchSocial) who are making an internal magazine. I am the layouter and until now I have made it with LibreOffice because if there were changes in the group, anyone can download, use and continue the production of the magazine. LibreOffice is a great text editor however not the best for layout of 10-12 pages or more (and it is growing). I have researched for better solutions, software which are easier and more accurate to work with. We did look at the commercial softwares but the costs was far to high. Then we found Scribus which as we see it offers the same solution and features as the commercial software. Maybe there is a difference (of course in exchanging files with users of other software) – anyway we find it very hard to justify the high cost of the commercial softwares. Again, anyone in the group can download Scribus, use it and continue the production. First time I used Scribus it took less than 1/3 of the time I used to spend on layout, editing photos etc. It was a nice surprise to learn that you can edit a photo directly in the layout and it beautifully opens in GIMP.

Series of books on OpenSource software http://www.scribus.net/series-of-books-on-opensource-software/ http://www.scribus.net/series-of-books-on-opensource-software/#comments Mon, 25 May 2015 08:45:07 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=259 Reporter: Gerrit Bruijnes (gbratipaa.nl) | Date: 2015 | Scribus Version: v1.4.4

After producing a book on ‘how to produce and publish your own book using Scribus’ [1], I had taken up the task of writing a book on OpenOffice 4.x. Due to some complaining German speaking guys at a Linux ralley somewhere in the Netherlands, this title was quickly edited to serve LibreOffice 4.x users as well.
So now we have two titles on sale in the Dutch language:

Soon there will be a next new title dealing with the advanced use of formulas & functions in Calc,
which is used both in OpenOffice and LibreOffice. And there’s more to come!
Of course the layout will be done in Scribus version 1.4.4.

Here [2] you can find the cover, originally designed in InDesign :-) by Hans Hollestelle [3] from Kampen
in The Netherlands. The design was then rebuilt using Scribus.
(Some people still have to be persuaded into using OpenSource…)

I find Scribus 1.4.4 a fine program to use in OpenSource publishing in combination with one of the major
Dutch Printing On Demand firms, Scanlaser [4], beit that the interface could do with some improvements.
Eagerly awaiting version 1.5 because a little bird has whistled some promises regarding the interface…

Manufacturing Artwork http://www.scribus.net/manufacturing-artwork/ http://www.scribus.net/manufacturing-artwork/#comments Mon, 25 May 2015 08:40:58 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=256 Reporter: DigiDio | Date: Nov, 2014

Allround Promotion Artwork

We did a project for a big printing company who created hardware for one of there printer series. The main focus was to create a full set of inspirational art concerning: Manuals, serie number stickers and single color package print. Important question before we start was if it has to be printed offset or not. I Choose to start this project again with Scribus V1.4.3 and later V1.4.4 It did work out very very well. The manual itself took the most power of my workstation. This document went up at 12800 levels. This manual was fully loaded with vectors and no raster images where brought in. At the end the customer was very happy with the end result.

1. Manual fully based on vector styles 12800 levels !!
2. Same manual detailed view inside
3. Carbon Boxprint one color offset print
4. Scribus screenshot project files

Perfect job Scribus, cheers developers and the community. 2015 bring us hopefully the new upcoming v1.6 release let we hope for it.

Scribus 1.5.0 released http://www.scribus.net/scribus-1-5-0-released/ http://www.scribus.net/scribus-1-5-0-released/#comments Fri, 22 May 2015 21:57:41 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=239 [22.05.2015]

After many years of work and more than a thousand bugfixes and feature implementations, the Scribus Team is pleased to announce the release of Scribus 1.5.0. Scribus 1.5.0 is a preview of the next stable version 1.6.0 and has primarily been released for testing purposes, so more users can help us with identifying and fixing bugs. It is not stable enough for use in real production scenarios yet, but it can help users to become familiar with the new interface and the amount of new features, the number of which has almost doubled in comparison to the stable 1.4.x series. ScribusCTL project started http://www.scribus.net/scribusctl-project-started/ http://www.scribus.net/scribusctl-project-started/#comments Wed, 20 May 2015 05:37:29 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=182 Veteran Scribus developer Andreas Vox has started the ScribusCTL project. CTL stands for complex text layout and attempts, among others, to integrate the OpenType text shaping engine HarfBuzz. ScribusCTL will be synchronized with Scribus 1.5.1svn, and every finished project stage will be integrated into the official Scribus 1.5.1svn branch.

It’s an ambitious project project, so every available help is welcome. More information on the ScribusCTL wiki: https://github.com/andreas-vox/ScribusCTL/wiki

Since its humble beginning in the spring of 2001, Scribus has evolved into one of the premier Open Source desktop applications. Encouraged by professionals and beginners alike, the Scribus Team, with support from a large and growing number of enthusiastic contributors from all over the world, is dedicated to develop and improve “one of the most powerful and useful open-source projects out there” (TechRepublic).

Underneath a user-friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK colors, spot colors, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation.

Scribus has many unexpected touches, such as powerful vector drawing tools, support for a huge number of file types via import/export filters, emulation of color blindness or the rendering of markup languages like LaTeX or Lilypond inside Scribus. The Scribus file format is XML-based and open. Unlike proprietary binary file formats, even damaged documents can be recovered with a simple text editor – sometimes a challenging problem with other page layout programs. Scribus has been translated into more than 25 languages, and more are coming in the future.

Why on earth should I use Scribus? http://www.scribus.net/why-on-earth-should-i-use-scribus-2/ http://www.scribus.net/why-on-earth-should-i-use-scribus-2/#comments Thu, 14 May 2015 09:52:19 +0000 http://test.scribus.net/?p=172 Because it’s reliable and Free. Free really means Free with an uppercase F. Free is more than just gratis (which is just a side-effect). It means that you are in control of your data and, if you wish, the code of your desktop publishing tool. That’s what smart individuals and companies prefer
