Our vision for the expansion of Red Hook WIFI is that it will be a resilient broadband network that provides free internet access distributed equitably across the community. Currently, in addition to internet access, the network provides a platform for local communication, with content tailored to residents’ needs and interests. The network increases community engagement, thereby strengthening the social network of the Red Hook community.

Red Hook WIFI is a community asset because it provides residents and stakeholders with a platform for sharing and gathering information via the Red Hook HUB.

Additionally,

  • Red Hook WIFI is a platform for local communication and community organizing by enabling the dissemination of information on programs, events, resources and opportunities in Red Hook and beyond.
  • Red Hook WIFI can be used to collect and distribute information to address community concerns and needs; data collected is shared with the community in a useable format.
  • Red Hook WIFI creates opportunity for community members to contribute to the network governance and mission.

Red Hook WIFI is a resilient broadband network that provides free or low-cost Internet access distributed equitably across the Red Hook community.  In addition to Internet access, the network provides a platform for local communication, with content tailored to residents’ needs and interests. The network increases community engagement, thereby strengthening the social network of the Red Hook community.

Red Hook WIFI creates economic opportunity by:

  • ensuring that Digital Stewards and other Red Hook community members are employed in the installation, maintenance, and promotion of the network.
  • serving as a platform to disseminate resources/information related to jobs and educational opportunities to residents.
  • providing local businesses with a broadband connection, local marketing opportunities, and the ability to offer resources to a local audience.

Linking a Sandy Past to a Resilient Future in Red Hook http://redhookwifi.org/linking-a-sandy-past-to-a-resilient-future-in-red-hook/ Tue, 10 Oct 2017 15:19:44 +0000 http://redhookwifi.org/?p=2041

In the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Superstorm Sandy became one of the most devastating hurricanes in American history. The storm surge that flooded the streets of New York City and Red Hook on October 29th has lasting effects on our coastal community, including longstanding property damage, living conditions festering with mold and the uneasy question of when this can and will happen again.

Five years after Hurricane Sandy have created far more promising outcomes as well. Growing out of the chaos and destruction is a community more ready than ever to connect and respond to natural catastrophe.

Countless studies and initiatives have been launched at every level of government, including the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency which has launched The Integrated Flood Protection System (IFPS) Project, a federally funded coastal protection initiative aimed at reducing flood risk in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Red Hook WIFI is also gearing up to stand stronger and larger than ever, with resilient solar-powered backup systems to support continuity in the event of an emergency or power outage. Red Hook WIFI is a free, hyper-local community network that will foster community engagement and connection.

Young technologists from Red Hook also have a unique opportunity to rise from flooding waters of tragedy as champions of a new era, led by Digital Stewards, Red Hook Initiatives flagship art, technology and career training program.

A Spicy Taste of Red Hook http://redhookwifi.org/a-spicy-taste-of-red-hook/ Mon, 11 Sep 2017 13:36:06 +0000 http://redhookwifi.org/?p=2023

On September 5th, 2017, Red Hook WiFi published a heart-chuckling tale starring Ghost Pepper and Dark Chocolate, the key ingredients in a unique offering from Raaka Virgin Chocolate.

The video release comes just weeks before Raaka participates in The Taste of Red Hook on September 26th. The Bean-to-Bar chocolate maker also participated in the 5th Summer of Digital Media Bootcamp 2017, which trains young people form the neighborhood to produce videos like these.

Now in it’s 11th year, Red Hook Initiative’s annual fundraiser pairs Raaka Virgin with dozens of participating vendors offering up free bites from the neighborhoods most tasty food and beverages.

Purchase tickets to the Taste of Red Hook here and prepare your appetite for a smorgasbord.

Red Hook WIFI is in the design phase! http://redhookwifi.org/red-hook-wifi-is-in-the-design-phase/ Wed, 05 Jul 2017 00:00:37 +0000 http://redhookwifi.org/?p=1997 Red Hook WIFI Network Design

Red Hook WIFI is now in the network design phase!  We are working diligently alongside our partners to design a network that will strengthen the fabric of our community.

Our goal is to build a reliable network that creates economic opportunity, aligns with social justice principles, is resilient, and a community asset.

Design Partners T4D, with the help of our very own Digital Stewards, are in the process of building prototypes of the solar backup systems to be installed alongside WIFI equipment. Partners, Sky-Packets and Brooklyn Fiber are designing the layout of the network and working to ensure that Red Hook WIFI is strong and reliable for residents and stakeholders.

We are excited about seeing this project through to fruition and will keep you updated on our progress!

Digital Stewards Go To MIT http://redhookwifi.org/digital-stewards-go-to-mit/ Tue, 07 Mar 2017 16:42:26 +0000 http://redhookwifi.org/?p=1974 IMG_0570
Two days after the Digital Stewards graduation, 3 graduates from Generation 9 (Jazzhane Wade, Javon Webb, Joseph Alston) hopped on a plane and went to Cambridge, MA to give a presentation at MIT. We’d worked on a Red Hook Wifi survey during our time with Digital Stewards. It was our job to survey residents and people who work in the neighborhood, this is called Participatory Action Research (PAR).
We worked long hours in the summer of 2016 conducting and editing the survey. After collecting the 250 surveys, we analyzed the results. We came to conclusions that we need to bring the neighborhood closer to the Wifi. Our results and procedure are what we presented at MIT. We also got to sit in on a Social Injustice class at MIT, there we learned about different social injustices from people who come from different parts of the world.
MIT is huge! The campus is 168 acres long and education is free and that is the way it should it be.
We walked through the campus buildings with no complication except for lack of direction until we used google maps. The entire trip was fun and we enjoyed ourselves we wouldn’t mind going back!
