These are membrane bound, charged and I wonder if one can do more. Been reading this paper on the same.

Comment on Foldscoping from a boat – hello from NZ by laksiyer https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=26251#comment-53483 Mon, 10 Jul 2017 18:32:45 +0000 https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=26251#comment-53483 @Manu What a fantastic catch. Some diatoms, crustaceans, green alga and possibly phaeophytes. Cant wait to see more details. There are some great hot springs in NZ (school text book recollection), would be interesting to collect samples there.

What a wonderful journey of discovery. Just absolutely amazing. I have seen plants bleed all my life; never before did I realize it’s a rubber – and never before did I think about the chewing consequences. A beautiful example of the power of asking simple questions.

I also love the format of small videos – the tension was building up all the way to the end. Let’s compare latex from many more plants – I will keep my eyes open for bleeding plants. So should everyone in the foldscope community!!

Cheers
Manu

Wonderful to hear you are deep in the jungles of Ecuador. I think you forgot to upload the pictures/video. Or maybe it did not have enough time to upload.

Could you please hit “edit” on your post and add pictures. Would love to also see pictures of your surroundings. Very curious to know what’s living in these beautiful flowers.

Cheers
Manu

What a wonderful post. Absolutely love the different colors. I am wondering what species of butterfly this is. Could you post a picture with the entire wing spread out.

Also; you might find some techniques I posted on imaging butterfly wings useful. Just in case; see here: https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=22192

Lovely to read this. More Foldscope coming your way very soon 🙂

Welcome to the Foldscope community. It’s so wonderful to see you here. You are the first participant from the Intel ISEF community that is online – so thank you for doing the same. Do you have the macroscopic picture of what you were observing; can you share the same. Or is this the crabs that I caught 🙂

cheers

Comment on Testing Foldscope on pond scum, soil, onion, fish tank scum, and Morchella elata by Manu Prakash https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=26129#comment-53457 Mon, 26 Jun 2017 02:45:54 +0000 https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=26129#comment-53457 Welcome to the Foldscope community @IanHull.

Love the post; specially the number of items you have been examining. The last one seems to be fungal spores (small spore like objects). What stage was this fungal culture in. I did not know they are used in culinary arts 🙂

You all have an important role; you will be in a biodiversity hotspot; and I really hope you will be able to inspire the love for science and share the beauty of the microcosmos to many students you will meet along the way.

And the Galapagos – oh my. Darwin’s spirits will be rekindled. Keep exploring.

cheers

Wonder if it is some kind of aphid,. If you film the underside, you will get a feel for the mouthparts. If you see sucking mouthparts, they are likely to be aphids. Also you might want to try clearing them and making a few permanent slides. I like using GALA60 or Lactoglycerol for clearning them.. Look at Pantin’s density gradient. These are fun to play with.

Also, dont forget to try Timelapse for aphid development.

Sometimes reducing the amount of light helps. You could try taking a picture with a table lamp as light source.
