We should protest 1838 Mason as its another Ellis Act property now turned to TICs. The developer is a notorious shady type of guy that is no stranger to the Ellis.

That’s awful! We’ve come across his name before. We’re working on mapping LLCs right now. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring all of those into the spotlight. If you’d be into helping us with LLC research we’re always looking for more volunteers. Thanks for sharing that.

Our family was evicted via the Ellis Act in 2007 from our flat on Nob Hill where we had lived for 12 years. The building was cleared by a “serial evictor” named Sean Whelan who had done the same thing to at least 3 other buildings in the neighborhood. Six 3 bedroom flats were turned into 1 bedroom luxury units for wealthy TIC buyers and their dogs. The earthfloor cellar was dug out and turned into a private garage for 10-12 cars.
I spent a great deal of time researching those responsible for our eviction and the interlocking web of speculators who use equity swaps and the Ellis Act to profit. I researched transfers of titles between LLCs all over downtown neighborhoods, using the records at City Hall.
While we were fortunate to have sufficient resources to move to a better 3 bedroom unit just 4 blocks west, our rent tripled. As this was more than 5 years ago, it predates the current crush of high-income tenants who can pay any price, thanks to large salaries gleaned from Silicon Valley companies who provide free transport to distant workplaces on private luxury buses.
