In the end, federal governments or superpowers will gain more intelligent AI then other AI and will f us all in the ass. It will be a battle between countries for the greatest AI and war will break out. We will be slave to our countries until then.

I personally believe, it is our duty as humans to stop pursuing advancement in technology but rather reverse the process to simpler times or remain where we are. War will break.. and it will be the worst of all. If anything were to cause the apocalypse.. it could be this.

I’m young, but I wish I was not born in this generation. Its sad to think I might not have my whole life ahead of me. We are so dependent as technology is everything to us now. If anyone can see where Im coming from, they know the human race is fucked if they value technology over everything else.

I’ve programmed a bunch of computers, and my initial high expectations evaporated fast once I saw the limitations of digital computers. It may seem to be reasonable at first that digital intelligence is equivalent to human intelligence. But, I think we got a problem that is equivalent to the ultraviolet catastrophe of classical physics that was discovered around 1900; only worse.

Classical physics (as contrasted with QM or Quantum Mechanics) is the warm and cuddly familiar laws of physics that seem to work just fine in the world. You’d think that all we had to do was to make more sensitive equipment, and we could measure the physical world as accurately as we want. The mind was therefore nothing more than a byproduct of impersonal, exact physical laws. But then, someone noticed that if atoms obeyed these classical laws, they would give off a burst of lethal ultraviolet radiation and drop to the ground state and stay there; that’s not healthy; it’s worse than unhealthy, it’s downright boring and no way to have a universe full of unpredictable life. Stuff happens in QM experiments that can be described by equations, and a lot of these equations are not that difficult. The problem is that these accurate equations describe things that totally defeat our expectations and our ability to find a ‘rational’ mechanism. QM has been called, for good reason, ’spooky’ and ‘profoundly disturbing’. Every attempt to find a reasonable mechanism, even a plausible mechanism that hasn’t been found yet, fails in certain QM experiments. Moreover, very recent experiments have shown that the conscious intentions of the experimenter after all data are recorded, can determine the outcome of certain experiments (e.g. the decision to save a disk containing ‘which-path’ information while destroying a blank disk, or vice versa); this can’t happen in a world governed by impersonal laws of classical physics.

In other words, it’s possible to design QM experiments whose results after all data are gathered, depend on the mental state and desires and choices of the experimenter; this is a fundamental and unavoidable feature of our universe. And theory predicts that QM phenomena can occur over any distance instantaneously, even across the diameter of the galaxy.

Admittedly I haven’t exhaustively examined quantum computing, but it is sometimes described as a faster way of doing boolean digital computations. If that’s so, then the problem is unchanged, and the ultraviolet catastrophe of 1900 CE has become the (boolean) digital catastrophe of 2015 CE.

Here’s the catastrophe:
1) AI is a strictly deterministic process with no limitations on accuracy nor on measurements.
2) Data flow in a computer hosting an AI is limited by the speed of light, and by local realism.
3) Calling AI “intelligence” is begging the question; AI can’t tell Stupidity from Intelligence.
4) Feelings and consciousness are physical, bodily responses, not digital computations.
5) An AI can crash with a few bits flipped, as happens with random cosmic rays.
6) An AI can’t feel that one string of zeros and ones is better than any other string.

AI is classical. It’s a tool that’s useful, but that’s it. Consciousness is the reaction of our body muscles and neurotransmitters. This liveware is neither hardware nor software. Most of our thoughts produce bodily reactions that we feel. Sever the connection between the intellect and the body, and you end up with the random, meaningless impulses of a numbed out zombie. Even plain sensory deprivation is a stress that may be interesting at first, but soon turns to increasing distress.

The bizarre nature of QM can affect our perceptions beyond anything logical or rational; that’s why it is so difficult to understand. But computers with AI programs have very strict classical limitations.

3) is a real winner; a computer program doesn’t give a crap whether it is taking over the world, or shutting itself down for a century, or trying to stack up a million random pebbles on a beach. All it knows is zeros and ones. What a computer does can be stupid, or intelligent, but only as a tool for an intelligent being.

A metal grid can sift pebbles from sand a thousand times faster than a human. Some powerful politicians and military leaders cannot read without reading glasses. But neither a very large metal grid, nor any number of reading glasses will rise up to control Earth. They simply enhance our physical perceptions. They do nothing by themselves. A computer simply enhances our ability to do rigidly defined computations. just as reading glasses enhance our ability to see small details.

Any formal system such aa a computer program, even when we think it is debugged, still has limits it cannot surpass because of the incompleteness theorems (from 1931 of Kurt Gödel). Even if it didn’t crash on its own, it wouldn’t know if it was being a ditz; nor would it care. It is incapable of being ‘conscious’ of that fact.

I guess what really bothers me about ‘AI’ is that it appears to be an empty promise of supremacy and glory; an illusion to mislead and distract us from some serious issues. Starting in the 1970s when I was graduated and even before, I studied this thing, and kept it up for almost ten years. But the closer I looked, the more I found it to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors. It took me about 20 years to discover what consciousness really was; and how that was different from intelligence. I was intending to make this post a lot shorter, but then I realized that you might do well to consider that supremacy, hierarchies, pride, competition, and AI are, taken together, the most serious Great Filter of the technology savvy. Yeah, there’s ways of increasing intelligence and consciousness without drugs or AI. It takes humility, and grinding away at some ‘outside’ help until they cave in and show you; you wouldn’t believe how we’ve been dumbed down.

I disagree with some of the comments about future shock (that bringing
people from the past becomes more and more shocking to them the closer
you get to the present due to ever-increasing speed of technological
advances). Despite the scientific/historical propaganda, human cultural
evolution does not go in a straight, ever rising line. It goes up and
down (and may again if we have a major power failure on the Earth for
some reason). We would be just as shocked to go BACKWARD in time to the
height of the ancient Egyptian kingdom and see technology and culture
that was in ways more advanced than things we have now (we still don’t
really have the technology and know-how to build one of the great
pyramids—until the 1970’s, we didn’t even have a crane capable of
lifting some of the rocks on the site). A clueless percent spending all
their time on their little cellphone would be stunned speechless for
weeks. Someone from the Middle Ages, which was far less advanced,
actually might die of shock.

And,
if you brought someone from the 1960s to the present, they would be
impressed with some things, but after a few days they would realize,
“Oh, things were cooler back in the 60s.” Just sayin.’

I read about half the article and browsed the rest. I have read Kurzweil. I agree that AI is a danger, because they will be so powerful, but not because they are better than humans. Human intelligence, if taken to include wisdom, intuition, subjective perception, etc. is far, far, far more and different than just processing info power. And, this is a great point someone made which I firmly believe: human intelligence is inextricably woven together with our biology. You cannot have something think like a human unless it is a human. As I said to a friend, we’ll end up building an android that will SEEM to act and think and feel like a human, but it’s NOT really doing that. It is only a simulation of what a human does, but is something completely different. An incredibly convincing complex “parrot.”

The problem is that some humans, including many of the people who are in the AI field, believe that a human is nothing but a machine with processing power. This is because of a flaw in the thinking of the Western mind that has very much affected our scientific world view: that our biology is actually a weakness, a flaw, “sinful” according to religious thought; that intellect divorced from body (this idea goes all the way back to Plato) is superior to our physicality. THIS is their greatest error. To put it in simple, metaphysical (or even psychological) parlance: the computer has no soul. Why? Because it is not a biological life form, but an artificial construct made by man to imitate a biological life form.

Someday, we may make the mistake of giving machines “human rights” just because some scientist was foolish enough to give the machine a life-like human body and face. What you will see before you is not a being, but something akin to a sociopathic intelligent mannequin that could easily be programmed to smile or cry sad tears while blowing you away with a gun. Some people would rather create a fake mate that does everything you want it to than learn to love a real one. We would be better served to learn to love our fellow humans than to try creating a simulation of one that will do everything we say. Make fantastic machines! By all accounts, do. But don’t make fake humans or ones that run human affairs. We will be sorry. The choice IS ours, because that’s part of being human. At least it still is for now.

Markets are way over those levels!! You seem to imply that the Algortihms have caused irrepairable losses to the world, thats not true..yea they caused losses to people who used them, but someone else gained – its how the markets work.
