What is Paper Tiger Television?

Paper Tiger has been creating fun, funky, hard-hitting, investigative, compelling and truly alternative media since 1981! The programs produced at PTTV have inspired media-savvy community productions and activism around the world. Our archive includes shows that provide critical analysis of media, educate about the communications industry and highlight issues that are absent from mainstream information sources. Through the distribution of our short documentary programs, media literacy/video production workshops, community screenings and grassroots advocacy, PTTV works to expose and challenge the corporate control of media. Because of the bias and misrepresentation of issues in mainstream media it is critical to include diverse perspectives in the process of making media. PTTV strives to increase awareness of how media can be used to affect social change. A public that can strategically and creatively use the media is necessary for a more equitable and healthy democracy.

Paper Tiger Television is a creative, nonprofit, volunteer-based artists collective that produces documentaries, studio shows and advocacy shorts. Most collective members are media makers interested in creative, independent, alternative media production. We learn as we go and if nothing else bring enthusiasm! What is going on at PTTV?

Our Current Documentary The Trans Healthcare Project

The Trans Healthcare Project is a look into the lives of low-income and POC transgender and gender non-conforming people and their struggle to receive the care that they need. In a society that regularly denies people healthcare, trans people are often hit the hardest. This episode will explore the economic and institutional barriers set up to keep trans people from getting the transition related medicine and treatments, and focus on the community organizing campaign that helped to overturn the NY State Medicaid ban on Trans healthcare coverage. Told by the trans people of NY in their own words, we need help to share these stories.

Our Recent Work The Latin American Workshop

"The Latin American Workshop" tells the story of El Taller Latino Americano, a cultural center that brings together New York's diverse communities through music, art and conversation. As the center reaches its 35th year, it continues to remain a dynamic creative space in the face of rent increases and gentrification. Through the colorful images and sounds of the space, the film shows how the community created an oasis in the midst of New York City, and how it now struggles against displacement.
